Alejandro Moreno explains why MLS is hopeful expansion side Charlotte can follow Atlanta United’s lead.

One of the toughest tickets in Atlanta will be slightly easier to come by in 2020 as Atlanta United FC will go to full capacity at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for six games in the upcoming MLS season.

The team opened the upper deck for a game against the LA Galaxy last season and set an MLS regular-season record by drawing 72,548 fans to see a 3-0 victory.

The upper deck was also open for the 2018 MLS Cup when 73,019 were on hand to see the home team win a title with a 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers. That game was the highest attended of all-time in MLS.

Atlanta United has played host to the eight highest-attended MLS games that were not All-Star Games. The club set an MLS record with an average of 53,002 tickets sold per game during the 2018 season and could top that with the added capacity in 2020.

The six games where capacity will be increased are March 7 vs. FC Cincinnati, June 20 vs. the Philadelphia Union, July 12 vs. the Seattle Sounders, Aug. 1 vs. New York City FC, Aug. 16 vs. LAFC and Sept. 26 vs. the Columbus Crew.
